The Globalisation of Boeing

February 2004

Speaker:

  • Thomas (Tom) R. Pickering, Senior Vice President, The Boeing Company
In this seminar Tom Pickering, Boeing’s Senior Vice President for International Relations, reveals how he helped “Boeing go global.” He said his first task was "to define where to go and how to get there" and his approach involved the "three Ps" - people, presence and process.

"Essentially, to be global means to enjoy benefit from people, resources, intellect, financing, access and sales around the world," said Pickering. "We as a manufacturer want to draw benefit from a global footprint in research and development, engineering, suppliers and, some day, potentially assembly."

Boeing already has a global presence, owning Brisbane-based Boeing Australia Limited and Hawker de Havilland, of Melbourne. The company’s 3000 plus Australian employees account for half the number of Boeing employees outside the USA. A Moscow design centre has 400 engineers working two shifts a day, and, with others in Seattle and Wichita, provide a 24 hour-a-day design capability.

Tom Pickering is senior vice president for International Relations and a member of the Boeing Executive Council. He joined the company and assumed this position in January 2001 upon his retirement as U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. In his position Pickering oversees the company's international affairs, including those with foreign governments.
