Maximising Innovation and Proactivity in the Modern Organisation
July 2001
Speaker:
The demand for an innovative, creative, and proactive workforce has never been greater. As organisations struggle to be competitive in the light of global market places, and as they seek to exploit the advantages of new flexible technologies, more is required of their workforce than ever before. An employee who 'does as they are told' is no longer sufficient. Staff are required who have a flexible view of their role, who are prepared to make suggestions and act on them, who solve problems creatively, and who effectively co-ordinate their activities with others. Research shows, for example, that innovation often arises out of experts from different disciplines successfully communicating across different 'thought worlds' to work on a common problem.
CEO's often have the mistaken view that innovation and creativity are the exclusive domain of product development departments. They also often assume a lack of creativity in an employee is due to the employee being naturally 'uncreative'. Yet research shows that employees are much more creative than they typically have the opportunity to be. Therefore, it is important to design environments that unleash employees' existing potential for innovation, that help to develop creative potential, across the whole workforce.
The following types of questions are addressed:
- Is creativity and proactivity important in all contexts, or are there some organisations where innovation is unimportant?
- What types of organisation and work design are necessary to obtain an innovative workforce?
- What human resource practices and systems need to be in place?
- Who has been successful at achieving this type of change?
- How do you move beyond the 'rhetoric' to actually unleash creativity?
Panelists:
- Curtis Berry, HR Director, TNT
- Elizabeth Broderick, Partner, Blake Dawson Waldron
- Les Cupper, Head Group HR, Commonwealth Bank of Australia
- Clyde Morgan, HR Director, Kellogg
