Perth Lifelong Learning: Competing for Talent in a Booming Economy with Professor Peter Murmann
04 September 2007
Professor J. Peter Murmann will draw out lessons from his previous studies to make some suggestions on how to recruit and keep talent in the booming economy in Western Australia. Professor Murmann, who joined AGSM last year from Kellogg School of Management in the US, is the author of "Knowledge and Competitive Advantage: The Coevolution of Firms, Technology and National Institutions". While at Kellogg, research based on his book won Professor Murmann the 2004 Reiter Best Paper Award at the school and the 2004 award of the International Joseph Schumpeter Society. The book traces the development of an industry over a seventy-year period in which competition for leading chemists played a decisive role in giving some firms a sustainable competitive advantage. Collecting data on every single chemist who graduated from German universities, Professor Murmann is currently performing a follow-on study that examines even more systematically the recruitment and retention of talent was a key competitive advantage.
