AGSM MBA students victors in Sports Shield

26 July 2007

The sporting prowess and agility of MBA students from Australia’s two top business schools took precedence over brainpower last weekend, with AGSM students victorious in the annual AGSM-MBS Sports Shield.

The Shield is a bi-annual challenge event between students from AGSM and Melbourne Business School (MBS). It began in 2005 after the student societies from both schools agreed to settle their friendly rivalry on the sporting field.

AGSM won convincingly, beating MBS in beach volleyball, indoor soccer, and drawing in touch football. An odd number of sports ensured a winner.

AGSM now leads the series 3-1. “The AGSM-MBA Class of 2008 is proud to have taken back the Shield from MBS and is looking forward to defending the title in Melbourne next year,” said AGSM Student Society President Danny Van Clief.

“The competition has a brief but colourful history, producing its fair share of high drama and competition, and this weekend was no exception.”

“Along the way there were some injuries and hospital visits, but everyone is fine.”

Mr Van Clief said while the competition was friendly, AGSM was proud to have won back its boasting rights from MBS after its win in 2006.

“AGSM MBA students have won back the Shield fair and square and relish the opportunity to put it in the trophy case until next year."

Following the competition, festivities started when the Shield was presented to the AGSM students at a boat cruise on Sydney Harbour. MBS was magnanimous in defeat, toasting the winning side during the trophy presentation. The salute was returned by the AGSM side, who charged their glasses to the MBS athletes before commencing the celebration.

The AGSM-MBS Sports Shield took place on 27-28 July, 2007 at the AGSM Kensington campus at UNSW.

Mr Van Clief said the weekend was designed to celebrate the friendly rivalry enjoyed between Australia’s top two MBA programs.

“It didn’t come easily, but victory is ours!”
