Brain science of organisational leadership behaviour

24 September 2007

Leadership models are informative about the actions of leaders but relatively silent on the reasons why they act one way or another. Personality, cognitive capabilities and knowledge are all possible explanations for leadership behaviour.

Research into a new concept, NeuroLeadership, seeks to link the physiological nature of the brain to leadership behavior in organisational contexts.

A discussion of the potential of NeuroLeadership for management will be the focus of an upcoming AGSM Lifelong Learning Event. The event will be moderated by Professor Robert Wood, Director of the Accelerated Learning Laboratory at the Australian School of Business.

Panelists include David Rock, leadership author and co-founder of Results Coaching Systems, and Victoria Sherwood, head of the Booz Allen Hamilton’s Organisational Change practice in Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia.

“Business leaders of successful companies are taxed with a growing demand for leadership talent to fill the middle and senior management roles in their companies. Ensuring a constant supply of future leaders requires the identification of potential leaders and their accelerated development,” said Professor Wood.

“New approaches such as NeuroLeadership offer potential strategies for the identification and development of leaders and, therefore, deserve our consideration.”

“This event will apply the Neuroscience of Leadership to real-life case examples, with expert panel discussion into the implications for practising business leaders.”

The panel discussion is part of AGSM’s Lifelong Learning Series. The series keeps AGSM alumni abreast of current business issues and provides them with networking opportunities.
