Peter Devine


Profile summary
Dr Peter Devine is a graduate of the AGSM MBA (Executive) Class of 2000, where he received the Alumni Scholarship and Dean’s Prize. Peter was also a recipient of the Centenary Medal in 2003 for outstanding contribution to the business of biotechnology.

Peter has been a member of AGSM MBA Programs adjunct faculty since 2002, and he currently lecturers at the University of Queensland (since 2001), and Griffith University (since 2002), and has previous held lecturing positions at Queensland University of Technology (1999-2002) and Macquarie University (1994-95). He has co-supervised PhD and Masters students from the Queensland University of Technology and La Trobe University, refereed PhD theses for students from Australian universities, and reviewed manuscripts for numerous international journals. Prior to this, he tutored in Higher School Certificate Mathematics for 10 years.

Peter started his career in medical research. As well as completing a BSc with Honours at the University of New South Wales, and a PhD in gynaecological oncology at the University of Queensland, Peter worked on a number of grant-funded research projects. He was awarded 14 research grants from funding bodies including the National Health & Medical Research Council, the Queensland Cancer Fund and the Prince Charles Hospital Foundation.

Peter also has extensive experience in commercial research, having worked at four Australian biotechnology companies. From 1995-2000, Dr Devine had a range of positions as part of the Executive Team at PanBio - a Queensland biotechnology company. During that time, Peter was involved in the preparation of successful applications for the 1995 Australian Small Business of Year Award, 1997 Australian Quality Award, 1998 Queensland Export Award (Innovative Manufacturer) and the BRW Top 100 Fastest Growing Australian Companies 1995-2000. Peter also worked at Biotechnology Australia (1984-87), Medical Innovations Ltd (1988-1990) and Progen Industries Ltd (1991-1992).

His research career involved extensive statistical analysis of data. Nearly 100 research papers were published in international scientific journals, and over 100 presentations on this work were delivered at scientific conferences. Four international patent applications were also submitted throughout this time.

Peter also has a breadth of experience in strategic planning, and demonstrated an ability to communicate and translate this plan into action through the leadership of teams of up to 20 staff. He has also led a number of successful change management projects.

He currently works as Regional Director for Uniseed – a seed venture capital company. In this role, Peter is responsible for Uniseed's day-to-day activities in Queensland, and plays a pivotal role in the sourcing, selection and management of the company’s investments. He also serves on the board of AusBiotech Ltd (the Australian biotechnology industry association), as well as four Australian biotechnology start-up companies. He is also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
