Alan Burton-Jones
Profile summary
Formerly a director of multinational British Oxygen's computer services business in the UK, Dr. Alan Burton-Jones now heads an international management consultancy practice headquartered in Australia. He was awarded a PhD by Canberra University in 2007. His doctoral research explored the relationships between firms' human sourcing strategies, their HR management practices and organizational effectiveness, providing significant new evidence of causal effects. His consultancy work focuses on strategies for managing firms’ intellectual resources i.e. people, internal and external relationships and structural assets such as systems, processes, copyrights and brands.
He frequently speaks at international conferences and industry forums and regularly conducts public seminars and workshops in Australia, Asia and UK on managing people and intellectual resources for performance improvement. He has also delivered executive training courses for the UK Institute of Directors (IOD), UK Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, US-based Conference Board and the Asia Productivity Organization.
His book: Knowledge Capitalism (Oxford University Press, 1999, 2001, 2005) was well received by both the business and academic communities and the Japanese translation (Nikkei 2002) was a business best seller. He is currently co editing the Oxford Handbook of Human Capital with Professor J.-C. Spender (Oxford University Press, forthcoming 2009). His writings have also been published in a number of leading international journals.
He contributed to the development of the Australian Federal Government report on the knowledge-based economy in APEC countries (DISR 2000), the Australian national KM Framework published by Standards Australia and created and led the Asia-Pacific Learning and Knowledge Management Council (pan-Pacific industry group). He has lectured at postgraduate level at Bond University, Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology, and the University of New South Wales. He is an adjunct faculty member of the Australian Graduate School of Management (University of New South Wales) and Griffith University.
