John Reid AO honoured

AGSM Emeritus Chairman Mr John Reid AO recently received the Goldman Sachs JBWere Philanthropy Leadership Award for his advocacy of Australian art.

The award, presented by the Australian Business Arts Foundation (AbaF), recognises an individual with outstanding leadership skills in encouraging philanthropic giving to Australian culture.

Mr Reid was Chairman of Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Arts (MCA) for four years from 1994 to 1998. His advocacy and financial support contributed to the Museum’s vision and success as an important national cultural institution. He donated over $1 million to the MCA through the Reid Family Trusts and personal contributions.

Mr Reid supported the National Art Gallery of Victoria, Opera Australia, and the Australian Theatre for Young People. Other distinguished positions include Chairman of TechStar Limited, the Australian Bicentennial Authority, and Director of Qantas Airways. He helped to formulate financial strategies that led to the growth and recognition of these institutions.

Mr Reid served as a Member of the AGSM Board from 1991 to 2000. He was a long serving Chairman of the Thyne Reid Charitable Trusts, which facilitates AGSM’s Andrew Thyne Reid Scholarship for students from the not-for-profit sector. The John B Reid Theatre in AGSM’s Kensington campus is named in Mr Reid’s honour.
