There was fierce competition in Melbourne during the last week of October 2005 and it wasn’t because of the Melbourne Cup. Friday, 28 October marked the first ever AGSM/MBS Sports Day competition. Nineteen full time students from AGSM flew down to Melbourne to compete against the Melbourne Business School in golf, cricket and tennis. In the end, AGSM emerged the winner.

The contest started on the green at Albert Park Golf Club where two student duos and one alumni team played 18 holes of golf. Five hours later, Tom Gleeson and Krista Walter of AGSM beat Peter Wolff and Rhys Salang of MBS. Ben Hutt and Mark Williams of AGSM kept MBS’ Grant Mansell and Diederick Tessalaar on their toes all morning, but lost by a hair on the 18th. The AGSM alumni team of James O’Brien and Carl Nunan won against MBS alumni James Xu and Philip Walters, tipping the overall golf competition in AGSM’s favour.

Cricket did not go as well, MBS beating AGSM 50-41 in 12 overs. AGSM coach Anand Ravindran and team put forth their best effort, but in the end MBS Glen Brennan’s excellent batsmen knocked AGSM’s bowls out of the park, and out of the contest.

The day wrapped up at the National Tennis Centre show courts with a singles and doubles tennis competition. Tom Gleeson and Mark Williams won both their respective singles rounds 9-2, as well as the doubles contest, where they obliterated MBS’ Carlos de la Torre and Shakeel Mohammed 6-0.

The official Sports Cup was awarded to AGSM later in the evening at a cocktail party at the Old Melbourne Gaol. Over 100 AGSM and MBS students, faculty and alumni celebrated what will hopefully become an annual event.

With the support of AGSM Dean Rob McLean, AGSM invited MBS for a rematch in Sydney during the first week of March 2006. The NSW version of the contest will include beach volleyball and touch rugby. The entire AGSM community is invited to participate. More details will be announced closer to the event.
